Metachronous and synchronous bilateral germ cell testicular tumors

SUMMARY

Out of 840 patients with germ cell tumors of testis 12 (1,4%) have been diagnosed with the tumor of contralateral testis. 10 patients developed metachronous tumor in 35 months on average, and 2 patients developed synchronous tumor. Histology of the tumors was identical bilaterally in 10 patients: 9 patients were diagnosed with seminoma, and one patient developed embryonic cancer. The last patient developed teratoma on one side, and seminoma on another side. High orchidectomy had been performed on 10 patients, and bilateral partial orchidectomy had been performed on 2 patients. After diagnosis of tumor of contralateral testis 5 patients were only followed-up, 4 were treated with chemotherapy, and one was treated with surgical removal of residual tumor after chemotherapy. Two patients have died due to progression of the tumor. 10 patients are alive without recurrences and metastasis from 12 months to 20 years.

All patients with unilateral tumor of testis have heightened risk of contralateral tumor of the testis.
