Biopsy of the prostate gland: multifocal versus monofocal?

SUMMARY

We present our experience in 187 multifocal and 270 monofocal biopsies of prostate in patients suspicious of prostate cancer in 2010-2011. Based on the further treatment modalities selected for patients with verified prostate cancer we suggested that monofocal biopsy of the prostate is sufficient and efficient in patients with locally advanced and metastatic cancer, who are not candidates for radical prostatectomy of radical EBRT. All other patients are candidates for multifocal biopsy. Also we presented the diagnostic value of transrectal biopsy in verifying urine bladder cancer, recurrent adenocarcinoma of the colon, and PNET of the pelvis.
