The effect of retroperitoneal lymph node dissection on treatment outcome in patients with nonseminomatous germ cell tumors of testis
SUMMARY
We performed the retrospective analysis of treatment outcome in 118 patients with nonseminomatous germ cell tumors of testis with regional and remote metastases. Patients after first line chemotherapy with residual tumors (RT) further underwent retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RLND). According to pathology report after RLND, RT harbored necrosis, teratoma and malignant tumor (of germcell nature, and cases of malignant teratoma) in 54.2%, 28.5% and 15.3% patients, respectively.
If complete clinical remission achieved after administration of first line chemotherapy the RLND can be omitted in majority of patients, because progression of the disease occurs beyond the retroperitoneal space.
